To mark his contribution as co-ordinator for East Vale Community Transport (EVCT), Alun Harper was presented with a cheque at an informal party at Foxy’s Deli last month.
Alun, who lives in Barry, has worked since 2003 with the Penarth-based charity which provides accessible minibus transport within the eastern Vale. He has co-ordinated bookings, maintained contact with the volunteer drivers, and completed all the associated administration.
During this time he has made many friends: grateful bus-users, volunteers drivers and trustees all gathered to wish him well.
He was accompanied by his wife, Chris, who is a trustee for the charity.
What made Alun special was his interest in the buses and their maintenance. In the 31-year history of EVCT, he is the only co-ordinator to understand buses as well as the needs of passengers.
Luckily for those who depend on the EVCT to get them to, for example, meetings or shopping, volunteer driver Keith Crabtree has taken on this responsibility.
EVCT is now seeking a part-time co-ordinator to work at its office in Penarth, and would welcome applications. Currently the office is being run by volunteers and temporary workers.
