Resurgent tennis teams impress

The men’s teams of Cowbridge Tennis Club have had welcome resurgence in form since our last report.

The women’s good start has clearly rubbed off as the mens A, B and C teams have picked up their first wins of the season.

The mens A kicked things off with wins over Chepstow and Glamorgan VA in division Prem3 that has seen them push towards the top of the league.

The mens B chalked up a first win away to Pentyrch on a challenging windy Saturday afternoon. The mens C have are now also pushing to the top of their league with wins over Lisvane and Penarth.

Our ladies second team continue to be the leading lights in the club and have won five out of five to sit pretty at the top of Division 5.

Kate Button and Sarah Penketh remain unbeaten, continuing Sarah’s amazing season - rumours of an entry to Wimbledon qualifiers abound but Sarah has reassured us it clashes with her sailing calendar!

The ladies first team have had a few tough games recently with their great start to the season helping them consolidate a top half position half way through the season.

The club has had a number of social events recently with some suggesting the second Celtic Keg Cup, a friendly tournament held by the men’s section on the evening of the European Cup Final, is responsible for the recent upsurge in form.

The popular Grand Slam fun tournaments summer season kicked off with French Open tournament on June 10, suitably won by Yannick Francois and the mercurial Sarah Penketh, with Peter Launder and Sian Roberts as runners-up.

The next tournament will be on Saturday, July 15 for Wimbledon with 48 men, women and junior members expected to take part with a BBQ, Pimms and strawberries and cream, so if you are thinking of giving tennis a go come along and see what the club is about.

The club has a thriving membership and there are opportunities for all to play most nights, Saturday afternoons and ladies mornings so you can play where you feel most comfortable.

We are a friendly family-orientated club and are always welcoming new members. More detailed information is available on our website http://cltc.webs.com/ or please call our coach Ian Duggan on 07919 816609.
